I do actually have a quick question, if you've got a few minutes. I heard that people actually encountered the Porter in person? Do you know any more details on that?
Thanks so much! You're probably busy, so get back to me when you can!
[ translation: YOUR FUCKING FRIEND BILLY WON'T WRITE ME UP A DAMN THING ON MEETING THE PORTER I WILL HAVE THIS INFORMATION IF IT KILLS ME and OH MY GOD GET BACK TO ME RIGHT NOW I HUNGER FOR KNOWLEDGE I NEED IT ]
[It doesn't occur to her that Billy won't divulge the details, but Kate and Loki have a policy of tell everyone everything, so she doesn't think twice about it.]
Two people had face to face meetings with the imPort last July. One was Billy Kaplan. The other was Hange Zoe. There were more who were supposed to go in, but as best as I can see, they were ported out before these meetings took place.
Billy's meeting involved a recording (this is hush hush, but ultimately fruitless ... which I suspect they know because they never caught it). We gave him a specialized contact so that he could keep track of everything.
Things he learned:
• Minor magic worked around the Porter. Billy is a very magical being, so his existence did not pose a threat. A little magic did not pose a threat.
• There is only one Porter that is the "main" one. The other three it is connected to are manmade.
• Lachesis could have access to all of them, but she hasn't turned up. You can see where I applied this information elsewhere!
• The government assumes that Lachesis accessed this world due to having limited time to find somewhere else to drop the imPorts.
• The Porter is not a flirt. (Blame Loki. You'll know who Loki is soon enough, I'm sure! He's around as much as I am.)
As for Hange Zoe, she provided
• The Porter doesn't provide any background information on the imPorts, so what's in our files is all that they've got. Where this information is inside of the Porter is unknown.
• They asked about precognition and whether that plays a role, but that's unknown.
• It used to be possible to send people home at their request, but Lachesis changed that. (Again, this has been applied elsewhere!)
• The government classifies Lachesis as a sentient and nearly omnipotent program known as Lachesis, and it scans each imPort bright in through "unknown means" to produce information like their names and abilities. It's not clear how this happens.
• The government believes that the Porter gives off radiation that gives imPorts their powers (or changes them or allows them to keep them). A caveat here is that this makes no sense! For a number of reasons. But I'll try to keep this clinical for you.
• Only imPorts can have powers. The tech here can't produce them. Which also doesn't make sense.
• Hange Zoe asked about a virtual reality simulation that we went through. It was said to be on a different spiritual plane, which ... given what happened there, is not surprising. But it doesn't rip the soul from the body.
• The government has some suspicions that the Porter (and thus, Lachesis) has motivations of its own, but those have yet to come into fruition. So, this is just stuff they said.
As you can see, what they learned was more like a Q&A session than anything else.
Yeah, I think it's one of those things you should take with a grain of salt. A lot of the information here is what the government has provided for us to know, rather than the actual truth.
I do think they mean computer program. That's just how they're processing it. While Lachesis does make a habit of possessing machines, it might be a modern thing. Either way, if she was a mere program, she would be a nonentity by now.
[ That makes more sense. A computer program that could act like a person...That seems hard to imagine. But it's not impossible, right? There are people like Knock Out and the other Cybertronians, whose intelligence is carried by wires and computer chips instead of by brain and blood. It seems unlikely that Lachesis is a program, but it's not impossible... ]
Would your friend Billy have known if Lachesis were a spirit? You said he knows a lot about magic.
You seem to know things around here. 1: which imPorts were back in that other world, with the other Porter? 2: are any of them particularly tech-savvy?
There was literally no reaction by the Porter to Billy's presence (or anyone else's). And at the time, his power levels were limited. Either way, he can't just look at someone and figure out their "true" self or whatever.
Can I know what this anonymous source had to say? I'll give you what you need to know, but I might be able to verify it before you go through the hassle.
And you can trust my word, Freddie. Which is more than I can say for you.
[Well, too bad for their neighbors, because Springsteen is yipping loudly, barking at Billy's door. Kate tries to pry him away with toys, knowing that grabbing at the dog is a sure way of getting her hands bitten.]
Billy, I'm coming in!
[It's said before she counts to five, grabs the knob, and turns it to open.]
I can hope, can't I? I mean, it's not like it's an ability that really needs to be kept hidden, right? There's nothing wrong with an ability that lets you see the truth of things. I think I'd brag about that one if I had it.
Maybe, but I can see the government keeping you away from objects like the Porter. They might want to know the truth, but that's also assuming they don't know the truth. See? There is always that catch.
[It opens, and Billy is sitting at his desk, his communicator in hand, which he may have blown up and then put back together. He blinks at her, owlishly, and then Springsteen zooms towards him.]
Sorry, that was loud, wasn't it?
[His face went from annoyed to his usual slightly crabby face in two seconds, which is an improvement.]
In the history lesson, it said the government got a little big on the military state thing. It's obvious that while they downgraded on that, it's at least still a present thing. It's way less obvious, but there is some sustained information control.
