[ The odd thing is that that doesn't worry her. Matt can know about the uniform and her nightly activity. She holds no doubts he would use it against her. It's the other thing she keeps from him regarding Dent that's cause for worry. ]
I got ported out for a couple of weeks.

[It's a filler remark about Matt's capabilities, and she doesn't focus on the porter remark for long, taking in Kate's features. The dark rings under her eyes seem to mark her with the same kind of disposition that Loki had when he came back. Asgardians don't really have dark rings, but ... the look is similar enough.]
Did you go back to something bad? [The statement with Renee is telling, but Kate isn't certain if she's supposed to be assuming that's the problem, or if it's something else.
It's hard to say. She's spoken to Kate a bunch of times, but does she really know her?
She never does. She thinks a minute could be spared if not a day, but she's never been quite so lucky. It had been June tenth one second and then it was the twenty-seventh another second later, leaving her head spinning for a moment. ]
That happens sometimes. People disappear, but they aren't... anywhere.
[ It may not be an accurate explanation. This level of science goes beyond her. If she's not here or back home, where does she go? ]
Kate doesn't say it, but it's obvious. Not everyone goes home to something terrible like Loki did. He just had a bad run of it, which is unfortunate. Her lips purse, and she begins to understand the depth of what happened, and the depth of her previous conversations with Kate, too.]

[ If there had been any irritation before, it seems to have dissolved into the sticky, hot air. All that's left in Kate now is exhaustion that she can feel finally sinking into her bones. ]
A lot of them are better off back home.
[ Even Renee who's about to face hell. Losing the respect of her colleagues, losing her partner, her parents, Vic... ]
Kate, you wouldn't be wearing appropriate sunglasses if you didn't feel anything about it.
[Kate isn't the type of person to sulk about those losses herself. It's something that scares her about herself, and her ability to pull herself back up and keep moving. The fact that she's aware of it means that other people are different. She knows it, and she prefers it.

[Says Kate, unaware that most of her moments of confiding in others are external. But she'll never be fully aware, not unless someone finally points it out.

[ Sophie had told her the same thing years ago when they were still young and maybe a bit idealistic.
A lot's changed since then and Kate's had to learn to do what she needs to alone. There's no turning back to the people who have hurt her or worse, lied to her face for chunk of her life. ]
